Smithfield Police are following up on leads following a residential break-in discovered Wednesday in South Smithfield. Police said the break-in happened between 8:00AM Tuesday and 11:00AM Wednesday at the home of an 83 year-old woman on South 2nd Street.
During the break-in, a total of $32,994 in property was taken including approximately $30,000 in jewelry. Other items stolen included a wallet, purse, car keys, and the victim’s eyeglasses.
Captain R. Sheppard said the case has been assigned to a detective and the officer is following up on leads in the case. Police said there were no signs of forced entry and the break-in does not appear to be a random act.
