4th Victim Dies From I-40 Crash

The Highway Patrol announced on Friday the death of a fourth person from a 10 vehicle crash on Interstate 40 near Benson on August 29th.

Traffic had come to a stop on the interstate for an accident ahead when troopers said a flatbed Freightliner truck carrying lumber failed to slow down and ran into the back of several vehicles.  Two people died at the scene and a third died a short time later in the hospital.

The fourth victim was identified as Sherry E. Allen, 69, of Four Oaks.  Allen was a passenger in a 2013 Ford that was struck from behind and pushed into the median of I-40. Allen died on Oct. 2nd as a result of her injuries according to the newly released information.

McRoy Skipper, 74 and his wife Josephine Skipper, 73, both of Georgetown, SC died instantly when their car was struck and burst into flames.  Michael Anthony Peters, 64, of Youngsville, NC died hours after the collision at the hospital.

The driver of the flatbed truck that troopers said was traveling at an estimated 70 mph when he caused the fatal multi-car crash, William Van O’Neal, 61, of Garner, has been charged with death by motor vehicle.  Photos by John Payne
