5 Family Members Injured In I-40 Crash

A family of five traveling through Johnston County was injured when their SUV overturned on Interstate 40 early Thursday morning.

Emergency crews responded to the 3:45am crash near the 335 mile marker, just east of the Highway 96 Exit in the Meadow community.

Initial reports indicate the father fell asleep behind the wheel causing his SUV to drift off the roadway and overturn on the shoulder. A child was ejected out the rear window but miraculously sustained non-life threatening injuries. All five family members were taken to Wake Medical Center for treatment.

The family was traveling from Indiana to Camp Lejeune to visit their son who is enlisted in the US Marine Corps and had a child born a day earlier.
