CommWell Health Awarded $50,000 For Preventive Pediatric Services In Johnston & Sampson Counties
The North Carolina Community Foundation has awarded $575,000 in grants across eastern North Carolina from the Louise Oriole Burevitch Endowment, an increase of $25,000 from the previous year.
This is the seventh annual competitive cycle from the endowment, which supports nonprofit programs focusing on education, health, and human services in 41 eastern North Carolina counties.
The 13 grants range from $25,000 to $50,000. This year, the endowment awarded:
- $50,000 to the Advancing Community Health Together Foundation for general operating support. The foundation addresses inadequate health care access due to persistent and generational poverty in the Martin County region.
- $40,000 to the Brunswick Partnership of Housing for general operating support. The organization provides emergency shelter and safe transitional housing for families and individuals experiencing homelessness.
- $50,000 to the Cape Fear Clinic to help fund a full-time licensed clinical social worker position. The clinic provides affordable patient-centered health care to low-income individuals and families in the Cape Fear region regardless of ability to pay.
- $50,000 to the Coastal Horizons Center for its rape crisis center. The center provides professional assistance to survivors of sexual assault across Brunswick, Duplin, New Hanover and Pender counties.
- $25,000 to the Craven Literacy Council to help with expenses incurred while providing adults with educational materials and books. The council teaches reading, writing, math and digital literacy to adults.
- $50,000 to E2D (Eliminate the Digital Divide) for laptops and digital support services for eastern North Carolina high school graduates attending Elizabeth City State University and Fayetteville State University. E2D refurbishes and distributes laptops to students from low-income families.
- $50,000 to NC FIELD to help fund a full-time community health worker plus general operating expenses. NC FIELD collaborates with marginalized communities to maximize opportunities for farm workers and ensure inclusion in rural eastern North Carolina.
- $50,000 to NourishNC to support Mobile Market on Market, a custom-built mobile grocery store for families with children experiencing food insecurity. NourishNC provides supplemental food assistance to children in New Hanover County who struggle with hunger.
- $35,000 to Open Door Women’s Shelter for general operating support. The shelter provides housing and assistance for women and children experiencing homelessness in eastern North Carolina.
- $50,000 to The Beloved Haven for general operating expenses. The Beloved Haven gives support and services to women who have been victimized by human trafficking and exploitation in northeastern North Carolina.
- $35,000 to The Salvation Army of the Albemarle Region for the Joshua Challenge Education Program, which partners with local elementary schools to provide after-school support for third through fifth graders in reading, math, and science. The Salvation Army of the Albemarle Region serves eight northeastern NC counties.
- $50,000 to the Tri-County Community Health Council, doing business as CommWell Health, for the promotion of preventive pediatric services in Johnston and Sampson County. CommWell Health is a nonprofit health center that provides medical, dental and behavioral health services for all and has 15 locations in rural southeastern North Carolina.
- $40,000 to United Way of Pitt County for its Empowering Young Minds Through Engaging STEAM Experiences program, which serves at-risk kindergarten through third grade students. The United Way of Pitt County’s mission is to ensure children receive supplemental services to increase their academic achievement, build positive life skills and empowerment for future success.
