Six people were injured in a serious crash Monday night on Highway 701 South of Four Oaks at Stewart Road. Around 6:00pm, a car traveling on US 701 collided with a vehicle that had pulled from Stewart Road into the intersection. After the initial impact, one of the cars spun around and came to rest in the intersection.
Seconds later, an 18 wheeler traveling on US 701 struck the car, causing the semi to run off the roadway and overturn on its side in a ditch. The tanker trailer was carrying pig plasma, a liquid byproduct of pork processing.
A total of 5 ambulances responded to the scene. Four people were transported to Wake Medical Center and one was transported to Johnston Health in Smithfield. One person declined transport to the hospital.
The Strickland’s Crossroads Fire Department stood by at the scene. The NC Department of Transportation and Johnston County deputies assisted with detouring traffic around the accident scene for several hours. Photos courtesy JoCoFire.com
