A 6 year-old child attempting to cross a busy roadway Saturday afternoon was struck by a van.
The collision was reported at 5:30pm on Highway 231 between Highway 96 and Covered Bridge Road.
According to the NC Highway Patrol, a minivan driven by Harry Burgess of Wendell was traveling west on Highway 231 when the 6-year-old attempted to run across the roadway.
Burgess braked and swerved to the right to try and avoid the child. The child struck the left side of the minivan. The minivan ran off the road to the right and struck a mailbox. The child fell onto the roadway.
The child, accompanied by his mother, was transported by Johnston County EMS to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. The child was listed in stable condition. Initial reports indicate none of the child’s injuries are life threatening.
Burgess was not injured. He will not face any charges, according to Sgt. J.L. January with the Highway Patrol District Office in Smithfield
The Corinth Holders Fire Department also responded to the scene.
