NC Highway Patrol First Sgt. D.L. Mobley said troopers responded to approximately 80 winter weather related accident Monday night and Tuesday in Johnston County.
Once the rain transitioned to snow and sleet accidents were reported in all areas of the county, but particularly west of Interstate 95.
A fatal wreck was reported Monday night on the US 70 Clayton bypass near Ranch Road but troopers have not said if weather played a factor in that collision.
Icy spots and black ice were the primary cause of the accidents. Many involved single vehicles.
Other than the fatal crash on the US 70 Clayton Bypass, no serious injuries were reported in the other collisions in Johnston County.
