8,000 Gallon Sewage Spill Reported In Smithfield

The Town of Smithfield says 8,000 gallons of sewage spilled Saturday morning in West Smithfield. The spill was discovered around 7:00AM in the area of Sunset Avenue.

Some of the wastewater flowed into the Neuse River.  Town utility crews responded and cleaned up the spill.   Water and Sewer Superintendent Aubrey Butler said crews also applied pelletized lime and wheat straw to the spill site.  State water quality officials were also notified.

Officials did not say what caused the spill.
