Johnston County Public Utilities has confirmed 84,000 gallons of sewage spilled overnight on Highway 210 near Highway 70 in West Smithfield.
The Central Johnston County wastewater collection system had a discharge of untreated wastewater from a force main in the 100 block of Highway 210. The untreated wastewater discharged into the Neuse River and into a pond that drains into the Neuse River. The spill was caused by an air release valve failure.
The spill was reported to the Johnston County Department of Utilities at 10:30pm Thursday and ended at 3:30 am this morning (Friday).
The NC Division of Water Resources has been notified about the sewage spill and is reviewing the matter.
