An elderly Johnston County woman was struck and killed by a vehicle at the Pine Needle Plaza Shopping Center. The accident was reported at 11:59 AM today (Wednesday) in the shopping center parking lot on North Brightleaf Boulevard at Hospital Road.
Smithfield Police Captain R. Sheppard said 85 year-old Hilda Phillips of Selma was walking through the parking lot when she was struck by a GMC Sierra pickup truck being driven by 82 year-old John Hendricks of Souderton, Pennsylvania.
Johnston County EMS and the Smithfield Fire Department responded to the scene and provided emergency care to Phillips, however she died at the scene.
Following an investigation by Smithfield Police, Hendricks was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Hendricks was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond pending a Nov. 25th, 2019 court date.
