A total of 8,600 pounds of personal documents were shredded on Saturday during the annual Johnston County Register of Deeds Shred Event. The event was held in the
parking lot of Edwards IGA in Smithfield.
Register of Deeds Craig Olive called it a “great success.” About 550 people turned out to dispose of old tax returns, cancelled checks, credit card statements and other personal data as a way to prevent identity theft.
Olive said the turnout was so great, it took 5-1/2 hours for everyone to be accommodated. The event had originally been planned for only 4 hours.
Olive thanked the co-sponsors of the event, WTSB Radio AM-1090, WMPM Radio AM-1270, Edwards IGA, Hinson’s Printing, and AIS.
