A total of 9 Johnston County fire departments responded to a mid-day fire Friday off Cornwallis Road in the Cleveland community.
The Cleveland, Clayton and 50-210 Fire Departments were dispatched to a 911 call reporting a fire that had started on a back deck that had spread to the home. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story home on Zachary Way in the back of the South Hills subdivision.
There were no nearby water hydrants so a Tanker Task Force was dispatched. Fire department tankers from Benson, Wilson’s Mills, Four Oaks, Selma, Archer Lodge and West Johnston responded to provide water to help extinguish the flames.
Ammunition was heard exploding inside the home as fire crews cautiously worked to put out the fire. No injuries were reported.
