JOHNSTON COUNTY – A smokey haze filled North Carolina skies at the end of the day on Monday and according to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality in Raleigh, Tuesday promised more of the same.

The conditions are primarily a result of hundreds of wildfires burning in Canada, sending smoke across much of North America.

The smokey pollution has prompted a “Code Orange Air Quality Action Day for Fine Particulates,” throughout western and central North Carolina until midnight EDT Tuesday.

According to North Carolina Division of Air Quality, an Air Quality Action Day means that Fine Particulates concentrations within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards. Children, active people, older adults, and those with heart or lung disease (like asthma) should limit prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.

Conditions are expected to improve on Wednesday, according to forecasters.
