A Kenly teenager died early Sunday after being struck by an Amtrak train. The collision occurred near the intersection of Highway 301 and Highway 581 in southern Wilson County.
The victim was identified as Kyle Joyner. Joyner was staying with friends while his father and stepmother had traveled to Virginia for the weekend to witness the birth of their first grandchild, according to media reports.
A witness said the teen was looking northbound focusing on an approaching southbound train and apparently did not see the Amtrak that was traveling northbound. He was struck by the Amtrak locomotive. Friends reportedly tried to yell to Kyle but because of the noise were unable to alert him about the second train. Tragically, his friends witnessed the impact.
Amtrak 89, the Silver Meteor, was traveling from Miami to New York City with 340 passengers on board. The train was delayed four hours before continuing to its destination.
