Annual Chlorine Treatment Scheduled For Johnston West Water System

SMITHFIELD — Johnston County Public Utilities will begin its annual water treatment change this week, temporarily switching disinfection methods for customers served by the Johnston West water distribution system.

Starting Thursday, February 26, 2026, the Johnston County Water Treatment Plant will stop feeding ammonia with chlorine — commonly known as chloramines — and instead use chlorine only for disinfection. The temporary change is part of routine system maintenance required under state and federal regulations.

The Johnston West distribution system serves many county residents and businesses, including areas in Clayton, Archer Lodge, Wilson’s Mills, Four Oaks, and some customers served by private utilities such as the Flowers Plantation area.

Officials said public water systems are required to use chlorine-only treatment for at least three weeks each year to help ensure no bacteria develop resistance to chloramines.

During the treatment period, customers using kidney dialysis machines should be aware the water will contain higher chlorine levels for approximately six weeks. Water conditions are expected to return to the normal chlorine and ammonia mixture on or around April 2, 2026.

County officials noted that the chlorine-only treatment may be harmful to tropical fish and aquarium systems. While most customers may not notice significant changes, some could detect a stronger chlorine odor or slight discoloration in their water. These effects are temporary and do not impact water safety.

The county will also conduct system flushing to help remove chloramines more quickly from water lines. Flushing activities may cause minor, temporary discoloration, but officials emphasized water quality will not be affected.

Johnston County retail customers can identify whether they are served by the Johnston West system by checking their monthly billing statement, where distribution system designation is listed.
