Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested Following Chase

Joseph-Kalvin-Aberant-FIAn attempted murder suspect was arrested following a shooting and chase Thursday evening.  The suspect is now charged with attempting to kill his daughter’s boyfriend.

Around 7:08pm Thursday, 36 year-old Alex Ortiz was shot multiple times with a rifle inside a home at 60 Waymon Way off Hood Farm Road, southwest of Clayton.

Johnston County Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said the suspect, 59 year-old Joseph Kalvin Aberant, of the same address, was arrested by deputies following a brief pursuit.

Ortiz was rushed to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.  Captain Caldwell said the incident remains under investigation. A motive for the shooting was not released.

The rifle was recovered from a grassy field across the street from the doublewide mobile home where the shooting occurred.

Aberant was charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle. He was confined in the Johnston County Jail under a $1,040,000 bond.
