Smithfield Police have stepped up patrols following an attempted armed robbery in the parking lot of the Johnston Medical Mall at 514 N. Brightleaf Boulevard. It was reported around 3:10pm Monday.
A 49 year-old Selma man said he was sitting in his car in the parking lot when a suspect approached him and at gunpoint demanded his money. Nothing was taken from the victim.
The suspect then fled on foot. A police K-9 was brought to the scene but was unable to locate the suspect.
The victim described the assailant as a black male, approximately 6 foot 2, weighing 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a navy blue button up shirt and blue jeans. The suspect was reportedly armed with a handgun.
No injuries were reported.
