Bear Struck On Highway 70

An out-of-state motorist had an unplanned stay over in Johnston County after their SUV collided with a bear.

The NC Highway Patrol said the collision between the vehicle and bear happened at 8:04pm Sunday on Highway 70 just west of Buffalo Road near Selma and the I-95 Flyover.

Gilbert Clough of Allenton, Michigan was headed westbound on Highway 70 in a 2019 Ford SUV at the posted speed limit of 55 MPH when it struck a bear in the travel lane.  Clough was not injured, however the animal died from its injuries.

Trooper D.R. Delcastilho investigated the collision and did not file any charges.

Damage to the SUV was estimated at $2,000.
