Benson is joining the Smith-Bryan Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in celebrating Constitution Week — September 17-23.

Sunday, September 17th marked the 230th anniversary of the framing of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention.

Johnston County’s Chief Genealogist and DAR Registrar Rebecca Owens as well as fellow DAR member and Benson Museum Board member Helen Smith met with Mayor William Massengill on Thursdayto recognize the upcoming week. Mayor Massengill signed a proclamation, making the observation official in the Town of Benson.

“As part of signing this proclamation for Constitution Week, I want to encourage all of our Benson citizens to commit to engaging into better understanding our Constitution,” said Mayor Massengill.

“This may mean for some, reading it for the first time or for others it may be a review. But we all owe it to ourselves and our country to understand ‘first hand’ what our founders desired as the framework for this country. Let’s commit to get it from the source.”
