Benson Middle School has won its second conference football championship in three years, again under Head Coach Lee Pegues’ leadership. The 2024 Phantoms also posted a 7-0 win-loss season, one win better than the 6-0 record of the 2022 team, which won the school’s first football championship in 13 years. Altogether, Benson Middle has now won the championship five times.
The team consisted of Leland Angeles, Layton Barefoot, Colin Beasley, Joshua Brewer, Armando Briones, Gatlin Brooks, Tyler Carroll, Akiles H. Camacho, Tyler Coston, Garrett Denning, Garrett Dowler, Brandyn George, Evan Gray, Sawyer Johnson, Nathan LaVigne, Keith McDougald, Deshawn McKnight, Bryan T. Miranda, Landon Norris, Angel Ortega, Jose Reyes, Jaden Ross, Jonathan Solis, Justin Spears, Caden Stack, Timothy Walden, Aiden Walsh, Marcus Walters, Landon Wheeler and Bentley Williams. Helping Pegues coach them were Assistant Rhett Saylors and Murphy and James Norris as well. Dana Jernigan is the school’s principal.
Athletic Director Brandon Murphy said, “We would like to thank Dr. Jerinigan and our community for all the support this season. A special thanks goes out to all our players’ families for helping in this monumental feat. Go, Phantoms!”
Cheering the team on were Aymara Alvarez, Genesis Alvarez, Kinley Beamon, Ava Beasley, Harmony Bland, Ayleen Chadiez, Kate Chadiez, Addalen Johnson, Jacibie Munoz, Kennedy Murphy, Georgie Potter, Chelsea Reyes, Jada Siler, Lakyia Surles and Emily Trainor. They were led by Head Coach Madison Bailey.
