Benson Seeking Funds For Workforce Development Center, Public Works Building

The Benson Town Board will work with Johnston County officials to secure funding for a Workforce Development Center at the Lee Street Complex.  Benson will seek a grant from the Golden Leaf Foundation for the Center, similar to the Workforce Development Center off Powhatan Road in Clayton.

Benson plans to partner with Johnston County, Johnston Community College and Johnston County Public Schools with the process including the grant application.

Town Manager Matt Zapp updated the board on several other ongoing projects including a $20,000 NC Downtown Revitalization Project that will focus on providing town-wide wi-fi service, $750,000 in FEMA funding for Wastewater Treatment Plant repairs from Hurricane Matthew last October and a Golden Leaf Grant application of $500,000 to replace the Benson Public Works department building.

Mayor William Massengill also reported that the Benson American Legion has raised funds to build a Veteran’s Memorial. A suggested location is the Singing Grove on Main Street.  The American Legion and Town of Benson plans to ask the NC State University School of Design to see if they can assist with the project and design work.
