SMITHFIELD – A bicyclist was injured after being struck by a car. The collision was reported at 2:37am Thursday on US Highway 70 Business, approximately 50 feet from the intersection with Britt Street, in West Smithfield.
According to a Smithfield Police accident report, Anthony LaShawn Shaw, 23, of Wilson was traveling westbound on his bicycle when he was struck from behind by a 2008 Honda driven by Glenwood Martin of LaGrange.
Police said Martin told them he was on his way to deliver an order and was checking his phone for directions when the collision occurred. Police said the bicycle did not have any lights.
Shaw was rushed to WakeMed for treatment of serious injuries.
At last report, no charges had been filed.
I hope Mr. LaShawn recovers and will be ok and get some lights on that bike and Mr. Martin, you need on board navigation and not looking down at your phone, but I also want to add that I have a world of respect for you telling the truth. You don’t see much of that these days. I also hope you will recover also as I am sure that you must be traumatized for hitting the bike.
