Bid Awarded To Elevate Transformer Flooded During Hurricane Matthew

In October 2016, floodwaters from Hurricane Matthew caused widespread damage and power outages.  In Smithfield, a key transformer that supplied power to Johnston Medical Center was flooded and power service to the medical facility was cut.

In an effort to improve reliability and prevent flooding from a future storm event, the Smithfield Town Council has awarded a bid to MasTec to elevate the transformer just off Hospital Road and near the JMC Helipad.  MasTec was the low bidder on the project at $69,225.

Funds to make the improvements are included in the Town of Smithfield’s 2019-2020 fiscal year budget.  The council voted unanimously to approve the expenditure.
