In their monthly meeting on Tuesday, the Johnston County School Board voted to award bids for mechanical and plumbing renovations at the old North Johnston Middle School in Micro.
The facility is being converted into an elementary school which will open in August 2016 to students.
The work involves designing a new HVAC system and plumbing retrofit fit for the school. The project was approved during the Nov. 2013 bond referendum.
Superintendent Dr. Ed Croom said approximately $2 million had been set aside for the mechanical and plumbing work and the bids came in under budget.
Allred Mechanical was awarded the mechanical contract after submitted the low bid of $1,603,125. Southern Piping Company submitted the lowest bid of $63,500 for plumbing work.
Dr. Croom said with the bids being about $400,000 under budget, it will free up funds for furniture and other needed items at the school next year.
In an unrelated matter, the school board voted to declare a mobile unit on the old North Johnston Middle School site as surplus. The 23 year-old unit is considered to be in disrepair.
