A surprise birthday party was held Sunday for William “Bill” Perry of Smithfield.
A total of 164 people gathered in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church in Smithfield for the surprise party in honor of Perry’s 90th birthday on Sept. 30th.
Among those in attendance was Carolina Mudcats owner Steve Bryant who presented Perry with a personalized Mudcats jersey with his name and the number 22, representing the number of years Perry has been a season ticket holder to the Mudcats.
This is the first year Perry did not buy season tickets for the Mudcats home games, but Bryant said Perry could attend any game he wanted and he would personally pay for the tickets.
William Perry and his wife, Vertie, have been married for 64 years. They have 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Asked what he thought about the surprise party, Perry said, “When you get old, you get a lot of attention.”
