WILSON’S MILLS – Bill Stovall has announced his candidacy for the Johnston County Board of Commissioners – District 6.
“Our county is facing change on an exponential scale. Change is here and Johnston County must decide how will we deal with it. Will we be swept up in chaos of unbridled growth, or will we take control of our future and guide that change through smart decisions?” Mr. Stovall stated. “I have seen, lived, and raised my family through the immense change that has occurred in the 27 years I have lived in Johnston County.”
“Growing up in rural Granville County, I left the farm for NC State to pursue a degree and career in engineering. I served the public for 35 years as a Professional Engineer fulfilling the technical needs of the two largest state agencies, the Department of Correction and the Department of Public Safety. Twenty-eight of these years, I served in executive leadership roles as Engineering Director and as a Deputy Secretary.”
“Johnston County is my home. My wife and I raised our son in a community that reflects the small town values I was raised on. In keeping with small town values, I have been a volunteer leader in the county’s 4-H program for over 20 years now. I see our small towns and communities struggling under the weight of mounting challenges from rapid growth. Since retiring, I never anticipated returning to a prominent role in government. But with the heart of a public servant, I cannot in good conscience stand idly by in the face of these challenges to my home. Our County has approached a pivotal moment in our history. If my experience and principles can help guide our county through the challenges we face, then it is my duty as a citizen to step forward and run for office.”
“My goal in running is simple: Ensure the values, communities and lifestyle that made Johnston County the place I call home and where I chose to raise my family will be preserved so that next generations will have that same opportunity. This can only be accomplished through county leadership championing smart, planned, productive growth. Growth decisions require collaboration at all levels and most importantly, a common sense approach. Such decisions should not be made without regard to our quality of life and finite resources.”
Mr. Stovall said he will campaign on three main pillars: Infrastructure, Education, and Public Safety. This includes safe and adequate drinking water and sewage disposal, promoting balanced development. Moderate residential growth so that student enrollment is more favorably accommodated by school capacity. Fund educational needs that prioritize efficient use of facilities, employee retention, and student safety. Fund first responder services (law enforcement, fire protection, emergency medical, etc.) promoting optimal manpower and response times Promote the availability of mental health services that address mental health crisis through appropriate facilities rather than facilities of last resort such jails and prisons.
“My professional and life experience has uniquely positioned me to serve as a county commissioner during this crucial time in our county’s history. It was the basis for my appointment to the Citizens Advisory Committee that recently steered the development of the county’s new comprehensive land use plan. This opportunity afforded me an in-depth understanding of key challenges ahead and how my leadership skills may help preserve quality of life here in Johnston County.”
This is the first time Mr. Stovall has sought an elected office. He will be running as a Republican.
The filing period is open December 4 – 15, 2023. The Primary will be held March 5, 2024 and the General Election on November 5, 2024.
I know Bill Stovall, he is a fine and honorable man. He with his knowledge and demeanor will be an excellent Commissioner for Johnston County.
