A precinct official with the Johnston County Board of Elections has resigned following a complaint. WTSB News has learned the official violated a policy of endorsing a candidate.
Board of Elections Director Leigh Anne Price said several complaints were received on Monday about the precinct worker at the Smithfield Early Voting site. The complaint alleged the worker had been publicly endorsing candidates in the race for Johnston County Board of Education and at least one other race.
Price would not disclose the name of the worker but said all employees undergo training when they are hired. One of the requirements is that precinct officials cannot campaign or show any partiality. “Political activity by an employee of the Board of Elections is not allowed,” Price told WTSB.
Price said she met with the precinct worker on Tuesday to discuss the complaint. The employee voluntarily resigned.
