A body was found in the rain swollen Neuse River Tuesday afternoon. Crews were called to the Neuse River Bridge over US 301 South of Smithfield shortly after 2:45pm today.
A NC Department of Transportation bridge maintenance crew was working to remove debris in the river that had gathered and had become lodged against the bridge support columns.
While removing the debris, DOT workers spotted the body and called 911.
Smithfield Police responded to the scene and will lead the investigation.
Police Detective Sgt. R.D. Wood said the Smithfield Fire Department will assist in the recovery of the body.
Officials have not released any information about the body including whether it is a man or a woman.
