Updated 8:20PM – Smithfield Police released a statement saying the body of an adult male was found behind a HVAC unit concealed by thick shrubbery in front of the library. The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Authorities are still working to identify the individual. Captain R. Sheppard said the library and the surrounding area is a safe place and police do not believe the incident poses any danger to the public.
SMITHFIELD – A body was found outside the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield at 305 East Market Street in Downtown Smithfield this afternoon.
Smithfield Police responded to a 911 call at 1:42pm reporting a body outside the library near the corner of Market and Third Street.
The Smithfield Fire Department, Johnston County EMS, and the Johnston County Medical Examiner also responded to the scene. Officials remained on the scene for about three hours.
Authorities have not released the identity of the person or any information about how they may have died.
Unconfirmed reports indicate the body may have been there for several days.
