JOHNSTON COUNTY – The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office arrested a murder suspect today (Friday) after a body was discovered near Four Oaks.
Around 10:30am, deputies were dispatched to 9399 Devils Racetrack Road, Four Oaks for a death investigation. Upon arrival, officers located Preston Shadrack Mayo, 39, deceased.
Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said officers determined Mayo had been killed at his home on Mamie Road near Benson and his body transported to the Devil’s Racetrack Road address.
Authorities allege Onzie Putnam Cox, 28 , of Harper House Road, Newton Grove, killed Mayo before transporting the victim’s body from Mamie Road to Devils Racetrack Road. Cox then fled the scene. Officials did not say how Mayo was killed.
Cox, who was a friend of the victim, was located and interviewed by detectives before he was charged with murder. Cox is currently in the Johnston County Jail being held without bond.
The investigation remains ongoing with no additional details being released at this time.
