A Johnston County woman lost $249 last week while in front of her computer.
The 72 year-old victim logged onto her computer on Thursday and within moments saw a pop up on her screen claiming her computer had a virus and she needed to call a number on the pop up to obtain help from Tech Support.
The Clayton woman called the number and was told she needed to provide remote access to her computer and pay $249 with her credit card to remove the virus.
After doing so, the victim said she lost control of her computer and could no longer perform certain functions including logging into her bank account.
The victim quickly alerted her bank before the scammer was able to gain access.
If you receive a similar pop up on your computer screen don’t call the number. You potentially have an unwanted program installed on your computer.
