Bomb Threat Forces Evacuation Of Triton High School

A bomb threat on Thursday forced the evacuation of students and faculty from Triton High School.

Around 9:20am, Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats said a student found a note in a bathroom eluding to a bomb threat at 1:30pm Thursday and Friday.  The student took the note to an administrator and school resource officer.

Students were immediately evacuated onto the football field then bused to nearby Gentry Primary School.

Explosive detection K9’s from NC State University, Fort Bragg, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Raleigh Police Department responded and searched the entire school campus for any devices but there was no evidence of a bomb. The Erwin Fire Department, Erwin Rescue Squad and Erwin Police also responded to assist.

Students were released at the end of the day from the primary school and not the high school.

School officials denied they overreacted to the bomb threat saying safety is always the primary concern.

The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident.   Photos by John Payne
