Both Drivers Killed In Head On Collision

SAMPSON COUNTY – Two people died following a head on collision on Highway 421 east of Dunn, in front of Central Baptist Church. The collision was reported at 8:43am today (Tuesday).

According to the State Highway Patrol, Michael Harrell Thomas, age 65, of Coats was traveling south on Highway 421 in a Ford Fusion, when he crossed the centerline and collided head on with a Nissan Versa traveling northbound and operated by Devonda Renee Moore, age 55, of Dunn. Both drivers were pinned in the wreckage.

Devonda Moore was pronounced deceased at the scene. Michael Thomas was extricated and transported to a helicopter landing pad at Spivey’s Corner Fire Department. He was airlifted to Wake Med where he later died from his injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The Highway Patrol said speed nor alcohol were contributing factors.

An eyewitness traveling behind Moore told the Dunn Daily Record that Moore could have been blinded by the sun as he rounded a curve.

Emergency crews from Harnett and Sampson counties responded to the fatal crash, which closed Highway 421 for approximately three hours.
