JOHNSTON COUNTY – The Boys & Girls Club of Johnston County celebrated Black History Month with an enriching Speaker Series, engaging youth through powerful narratives from local leaders, educators, and professionals. The month-long initiative was designed to promote leadership, perseverance, and personal growth, offering club members valuable insights into the contributions of African Americans to history and society.

A highlight of the series was a visit from Town of Selma Mayor Byron McAllister, who led discussions on influential Black leaders from Selma and assisted club members in preparing for the African American Quiz Bowl.

Other distinguished speakers included:
● Mortgage Loan Officer and Realtor Samantha Harding provided foundational lessons in financial literacy and equipped members with essential money management skills.
● CEO and founder of Tina Bailey Online, Tina Bailey emphasized the importance of determination and self-confidence in pursuing personal aspirations.
● General Contractor Rashee Muir shared an inspiring journey of personal resilience, detailing how he adapted to new goals after an injury changed his life’s trajectory.
● Selma Police Officers Tomeka Moore and Garrison Harris educated club members on emergency response protocols, ensuring they felt prepared to act confidently in urgent situations.

“Black History Month is a time for education, reflection, and inspiration,” said Kelly Blanchard, Director of Resource Development & Community Engagement. “Through our Speaker Series, we provide young people with role models whose stories exemplify resilience and success. We are grateful to our community leaders for investing in the future of our youth.”

To conclude the month’s activities, the African American Quiz Bowl was rescheduled due to snow on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Boys & Girls Club serving Wake County, hosted by the Raleigh Girls Club. Johnston County Club members distinguished themselves as the only all-5th-grade team, competing against middle school teams and earning an impressive 900 points. Participants demonstrated their knowledge of Black history, North Carolina facts, and Boys & Girls Club history, showcasing their dedication and hard work in preparation.

The Boys & Girls Club of Johnston County’s mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens.
