A former candidate for a vacant seat on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners in October has announced his candidacy for office in 2018.
Brent Wiggs of Clayton formally announced his candidacy today for the District 6 commissioners seat.
“As a native of Johnston County and father of three children, I want to see our county continue to grow and prosper,” Wiggs told WTSB News. “I have a great love for Johnston County and the people who live here. I want to be a part of the continued growth, as well as, maintaining the traditional values that made us what we are today. For these reasons and with a servant’s heart, I announce my candidacy for Johnston County Commissioner.”
Wiggs was one of four candidates who applied for a vacant seat on the board created with the resignation of Keith Branch in September. The board appointed Lee Jackson to fill out the term, subject to election in 2018. Jackson will be sworn in to the seat during a 9:00am ceremony at the Johnston County Courthouse on Monday, Dec. 4th.
“Our citizens in Johnston County deserve to be represented by a county commissioner that can be trusted to make common sense decisions, to not be persuaded by political or other distractions,” Wiggs said. “Sound judgment is paramount when dealing with issues such as infrastructure, a new jail, or maintaining our county water system.”
“It is also important to me to focus on the following areas for the people of Johnston County: safety, education, quality local healthcare and ensuring that citizens make a good and fair wage. I ask the citizens of Johnston County to grant me the opportunity to serve, to be that common sense voice.”
Wiggs, 42, is a 1993 graduate of Smithfield Selma High School. He is a committee member of the local Delta Waterfowl chapter and a longtime member of Ducks Unlimited. He is a current member at First Baptist Church in Smithfield and a former deacon at Wilson’s Mills Baptist Church. He has coached various sports teams in Wilson’s Mills and Smithfield Parks and Recreation.
Wiggs is also a small business owner operating Little Creek Labs. He is a four time winner of Salesperson of the Year for his job at Mutual Distributing, the only salesperson to obtain this achievement.
“As proven within my successful career as a sales representative, and also my personal business, I have the ability to work well with the public. However, it requires not just dedication, but also moral strength to be an effective community leader,” Wiggs added.
A total of 4 seats on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners will be up for reelection in 2018.
Along with the District 6 seat, seats held by Commissioner Chad Stewart in District 3, Cookie Pope in District 4, and Allen Mims in District 7 are all up for election. The filing period will officially open for the positions in February followed by a May Primary and November 2018 election.
