Work on a new bridge on Memorial Church Road near Fremont in Wayne County begins Monday. It will replace a 62-year old bridge over the Great Swamp area.
The work will require a road closure at the bridge location, starting at 7 a.m. on Monday. A detour will have motorists using Asheville Road, N.C. 222 and N.C. 581.
The bridge being replaced is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. That means it is safe, but its deteriorating condition requires more constant repairs, and it was constructed to design standards that are no longer in use.
The construction is scheduled to be complete by Wednesday, Aug. 9.
The NC DOT encourages motorists to pay attention when approaching the work zone, obey the posted speed limit and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely.
