Bullets Hit Smithfield-Area Home While Resident Inside

SMITHFIELD — The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two separate incidents of gunfire that struck the same home in the Smithfield area.

The incidents occurred minutes apart just before midnight Jan. 2 at a residence on Maple Leaf Lane, off Short Journey Road. A 57-year-old man was inside the home when gunshots were fired, with bullets striking the residence, deputies reported.

Minutes later, a second round of gunfire was reported in the same area. Investigators said additional shots again struck the same home and also hit a vehicle parked in the driveway.

Deputies located evidence showing at least two bullets entered the residence, including one that struck a chair in the living room. Bullet fragments were recovered at the scene.

Authorities said they do not initially believe the home was intentionally targeted and suspect the damage was caused by someone carelessly discharging a firearm in the area.

No injuries were reported. However, officials estimated the gunfire caused approximately $4,000 in damage to the home and vehicle.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. Callers may remain anonymous.
