Buies Creek – Campbell pounded out seven runs on 11 hits to defeat visiting Virginia Tech 7-1 Tuesday at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell moved to 20-23 on the season, sweeping the season series from the Hokies (20-27), who dropped their sixth straight.
Seven Camels combined for 11 hits, including a 3-for-3 effort with a school record tying three doubles from Matthew Barefoot. The redshirt freshman from Dunn, N.C. also drove in a run, plating in Drew Butler in the second with his second double of the night.
Cole Hallum drove in three, going 2-for-3 with a two run double in the first and a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third, his eighth of the season. He also scored three times in the win.
Campbell jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Hokies with a three run first inning that included Hallum’s two RBI double and a RBI single from Zach Minnick, followed by Barefoot’s two out RBI double in the second.
After Campbell starter Wes Noble retired the first six Hokie batters, five via strikeout, Matt Dauby put VT on the board with a lead off solo home run in the third.
Dauby went 1-for-4 to lead Virginia Tech at the plate.
Noble (3-2) went three innings for the win, striking out seven without a walk, allowing a run on two hits. Seven Campbell hurlers saw time on the mound in the win, combining for 11 strikeouts with three walks, while allowing two runs on four hits.
Nick Anderson (5-5) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in three innings for VT.
Ben Calvano also went 2-for-3 for the Camels, while Butler scored twice.
Campbell jumps back into Big South play this weekend, May 5-7, at Liberty, beginning a nine game road swing. CU has one home series remaining, wrapping up the regular season May 18-20 against Longwood. Photo by Bennett Scarborough
