Campbell will match up with regular season champion Winthrop to open the 2017 Big South Baseball Championship, Tuesday, May 23rd at 4:30 p.m. at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, S.C.
The Camels draw the tournament’s No. 8 seed, finishing 25-30 overall and 10-14 in Big South games. Campbell closed the regular season with a series win over Longwood.
Winthrop captured the No. 1 seed, finishing Big South play with a 17-7 record, and a 31-22 overall mark.
The Eagles took the season series 2-1 in Rock Hill, S.C. Winthrop held on for a 7-5 win in the series opener before Campbell evened the set with an 11-5 victory. WU claimed the finale 3-2.
The Big South Championship tournament is a double-elimination format and features eight squads competing for the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals — highlighted by a “Winner-Take-All” championship game on Saturday, May 27 that will be televised live on ESPNU for the second straight year. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
Liberty will be the No. 2 seed, while Presbyterian College will be third. High Point claimed the fourth seed, while Radford, UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb round out seeds five, six and seven.
The tournament begins Tuesday, May 23 with four games scheduled — No. 2 Liberty vs. No. 7 Gardner-Webb at 9:30 a.m., No. 3 Presbyterian vs. No. 6 UNC Asheville 45 minutes after Game 1, No. 1 Winthrop vs. No. 8 Campbell at 4:30 p.m. and No. 4 High Point vs. No. 5 Radford 45 minutes after Game 3.
The tournament will continue with Games 5-8 on Wednesday, May 24, Games 9-10 on Thursday, May 25, Games 11-12 and any if necessary contests on Friday, May 26. The championship game will be playedSaturday, May 27 at 3:00 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU for the second straight season.
