The fourth “Camp Courage” will take place on Saturday, June 10th from 8:00am until 5:00pm at Camp Mary Atkinson, located 8589 NC Highway 42 near Selma.
Camp Courage is an annual bereavement camp for children ages 6 through 16 sponsored by Johnston Health. This event was the topic of “Johnston Health Talk” as Liz Thurston interviewed April Barbour-Matthews, a Social Worker and Bereavement Coordinator at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.
According to Ms. Barbour-Matthews, “many young people who experience the death of someone they love need a supportive and safe environment to share their feelings.” The one-day free camp offers expressive art, games, music, and other activities.
The staff and volunteers are made up of professionals such as social workers, bereavement counselors, chaplains, nurses, and volunteers who have training in working with children who have experienced loss.
To register someone for Camp Courage go to www.johnstonhealth.org/campcourage. Online registration closes June 1.
The public may contact April Barbour-Matthews at 919-209-3478.
