The candidate who lost the mayor’s race in a local town last week was declared the winner today.

On Nov. 3rd, R.H. Ellington was the top vote-getter in the race for the mayor in the Town of Angier.  Ellington had been mayor for 10 years and had won by 1 vote over challenger Lew Weatherspoon the current Ward 1 commissioner in Angier.

However, there were 9 provisional ballots cast in the race for mayor. Those provisional ballots were not counted by the Harnett County Board of Elections until Tuesday.  After they were added into the vote total, Weatherspoon was declared the winner by a 3 vote margin, 263 to 260.  Mayor Ellington had served as Angier mayor since 2005.
