Car Plunges Into Creek Trapping Driver Inside

CLAYTON – A car ended up in a creek Wednesday afternoon after the driver suffered a medical emergency.

At 12:57pm, emergency crews responded to a red Ford Edge SUV in a creek on Cornwallis Road just south of Veterans Parkway (formerly NC 42 West).

The Highway Patrol said a Benson woman was driving south on Cornwallis Road when she suffered a medical incident. The SUV crossed the centerline, traveled off the roadway on the left, went down a steep embankment, overturned three times, and came to rest partially submerged in a creek.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle due to the water and because of her medical issues.

Cleveland Fire responded with multiple personnel including their Swift Water Rescue Team. They used their ladder truck for an aerial rescue due to the steep terrain down the embankment.

The victim was transported to WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries

The Highway Patrol investigating the single vehicle accident. No charges were filed.
