One person was seriously injured this afternoon (Tuesday) after a car slammed into the back of a tractor trailer. The wreck was reported around 2:00pm on South Brightleaf Boulevard (US 301 South) at Wal-Pat Road.
The Smithfield Fire Department used hydraulic rescue tools to free the driver who was trapped inside his car. The victim was loaded onto a stretcher and then into an awaiting Johnston County EMS ambulance where they were transported to the hospital for what appeared to be serious injuries.
US 301 South was shut down in both directions until the accident scene was cleared.
Smithfield Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
