Car Traveling In Reverse Slams Into SUV

Highway 301 South in Smithfield has reopened to traffic after being closed for more than an hour earlier today (Thursday) following a bizarre crash involving a vehicle traveling in reverse.

The wreck happened around 10:30am on Highway 301 South at East Underwood Avenue.

Smithfield Police said a Chevy Impala was traveling southbound on Highway 301 in reverse when it suddenly veered into the northbound lane and struck a northbound Chevy Tahoe.  The driver of the Impala fled on foot after the crash.

A Selma Police K-9 responded to the scene but was not successful in tracking the driver.  Before the accident scene was cleared the driver returned and was being questioned by police.

Charges against the driver of the Impala are pending.   Police said they are still trying to figure out why the person was traveling in reverse.

Two people sustained minor injuries in the crash. One was transported by ambulance to Johnston Medical Center for treatment.

The names of those involved was not immediately available pending completion of an accident report. JoCoReport.com Photos
