CLAYTON – The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the cause of a fire on Monday that destroyed a Clayton-area home. The blaze was reported at 3:32pm at 26 Ainsley Court off South Murphrey Road.

Firefighters from four departments arrived to find the house on fire from the front porch through the roof. It took crews just over two hours to fully contain the blaze. All the occupants inside made it out unharmed.

Fire Marshal Adam Stanley said investigators determined the fire originated on the front porch and was caused by the improper use of a candle. The fire was ruled accidental.

The Red Cross is currently assisting three adults that have been displaced.
