An alert firefighter called Johnston County deputies on Tuesday after noticing a broken window while driving past the Wesley Chapel AME Church on Cleveland Road near Smithfield.
When officers arrived on the scene they discovered the church had been broken into and money had been stolen.
The intruders caused about $150 in damage to a door while making entry. They also knocked out a stained glass window valued at $1,000.
An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
Deputies believe the break-in happened between 2:00pm Sunday and 8:00am Tuesday. There are no suspects in the case.
