LUCAMA – Flames destroyed a southern Wilson County church, Thursday evening.
Approximately 60 firefighters responded to Spring Hill Presbyterian Church, on Spring Hill School Road, around 5:00pm after a 911 caller reported smoke coming from the steeple.

Firefighters arrived to find a working fire inside the rural church.
Several firefighters were inside the sanctuary battling the blaze when the roof suddenly collapsed. Miraculously, they were not injured.

It took crews about an hour to bring the blaze under control.
A large building behind the main sanctuary was not damaged.

Strong thunderstorms were passing through the area at the time and a lightning strike is suspected as the possible cause.
Officials said 11 fire departments were dispatched to the church fire, including units from Johnston, Wilson and Nash counties.
