Clayton Approves Brunch Bill

Members of the Clayton Town Council unanimously approved the Brunch Bill this week.

During their monthly meeting held Monday night, the board held a public hearing on whether to allow restaurants and retailers in Clayton to begin selling alcohol at 10:00am on Sundays instead of 12 Noon. The legislation was approved by the NC General Assembly but municipalities have to pass a local ordinance before it becomes law.

Mayor Jody McLeod requested the public hearing even though there was no legal requirement to do so.  Only one person spoke and they were in support of the bill.

Clayton Police Department Chief Blair Myhand said drunk driving arrests are trending down in Clayton, according to recent statistics, and that his department will continue to work with local retailers and bar/restaurant owners on alcohol-related issues.

The measure will allow consumption of alcohol at 10:00am Sundays beginning this weekend.
