CLAYTON – The Clayton Fire Department has selected Chad Stephenson as its new Deputy Fire Chief of Operations.
Following a rigorous national selection process that attracted 25 candidates, Stephenson emerged as the top choice, bringing more than 16 years of dedicated fire service experience to the role. He will officially assume his duties on September 23.
Stephenson, a Johnston County native, has deep roots in the local fire service community. He began his career with the Thanksgiving Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief and played a crucial role in the merger of Archers Lodge and Thanksgiving Fire Departments, now known as Northside Fire/Rescue. Currently serving as the B-shift Battalion Chief at Northside, Stephenson is also a Fire Captain with the Cary Fire Department, where he has been employed since 2010.
“Chad’s extensive operational experience, coupled with his local knowledge and leadership abilities, make him a perfect fit for the Clayton Fire Department,” said Clayton Fire Chief David Ranes. “His capacity to manage the challenges of fireground operations while prioritizing team development and safety will play a key role in maintaining the exceptional level of service our community relies on.”
In addition to his leadership roles, Stephenson holds an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Protection from Fayetteville Technical Community College and a wide range of certifications, including Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Officer I & II, and Fire Instructor III. His experience spans fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, and technical rescue, making him well-equipped to oversee the department’s Operations Division.
“I am deeply honored to join the Clayton Fire Department,” said Stephenson. “This is a community with a strong sense of identity, and I look forward to working alongside a dedicated team to ensure the safety and well-being of Clayton’s residents.”
Chief Ranes added, “Throughout the selection process, Chad demonstrated outstanding fireground knowledge, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills. We are confident that his leadership will bring great value to our department and the Clayton community.”
Stephenson will oversee the day-to-day activities of the Operations Division, working closely with three Battalion Chiefs to manage resources, implement policies, and ensure the department’s readiness for all-hazard responses. His leadership will be instrumental in helping the Clayton Fire Department maintain its high standards of service.
Stephenson resides in Johnston County with his wife, Candace, and their two daughters, Carlee and Chloe.
