Clayton Man Killed In Collision Moments After Leaving Home

CLAYTON – A 59 year-old Clayton man was killed after his SUV collided with a US Mail contract carrier truck.  The accident happened at 5:50pm Wednesday on Buffalo Road, south of Highway 42, near Hidden Acres Drive.

Francis Hapin Jr. of Hidden Acres Drive, Clayton died in the crash. The mail truck driver was traumatized but not seriously injured. He was transported to Wake Med.  He had been headed to pick up the evening mail from the Wilson’s Mills Post Office.

Hapin, the driver of the SUV, had reportedly just left home and pulled from Hidden Acres Drive onto Buffalo Road. He began driving north on the wrong side of Buffalo Road. He drove directly into the path of the southbound truck.   Troopers suspect Hapin may have been driving under the influence.

Buffalo Road was closed for more than two hours.
